Overall it's a decent pixelated throwback to the olden days of point & clicking that unfortunately also shares a lot of its flaws. Here's what you will do for the majority of the game: Talk to a character until you exhaust of all the dialogue options. Go to next character and exhaust all of their dialogue options. Go back to first character and click through every single dialogue option again until you find the one new piece of dialogue you haven't clicked yet. It's extremely tedious. Whenever using your tool kits you're forced to play one of three mini-games, one of which can be skipped but not the other two.Kinda wish those were not included at all as they feel like pointless busywork rather than gameplay. The puzzles are fine for the most part, some are a little counter-intuitive. For example, in Act 1 there is a hammer on the very first screen. Of course your immediate instinct is to pick it up, but no matter what you try you are unable to lift it. So i figure the hammer is just a jokey reference to Thor's Hammer (yes the Marvel movie specifically) and has no further significance. But turns out there is a character who is looking for a hammer. So it has to be that hammer after all, right? Nope. The hammer in question is acquired by completely different means and Thor's hammer really is just Thor's hammer. That's just needlessly confusing. If a puzzle requires a hammer then there should be only one hammer in the whole game. On the plus side: The characters are likebale and the jokes are.well, let's say "pleasantly inoffensive" with numerous pop culture & videogame references thrown in. Graphics are unquestionably inspired by games like King's Quest or Quest for Glory. Easy on the eyes if a bit static. (Characters don't have walking animations they just kinda.stand there and narrate what's happening.) Music is fitting and pleasant. No voice acting but truth be told i prefer no voice acting over bad voice acting. There is also a built in hint system as well as a hot spot indicator which lowers the frustration of not knowing where to go and what to accomplish. Now with Act 2 out, i have to say i'm already liking Act 2 a whole lot more. Plenty more screens & people to talk to. Quality of the puzzle remains more or less the same. Mostly alright, with some frustrating "I'm out of ideas what to do next" moments. There are many instances of characters/items suddenly showing up that weren't there before. Or events that trigger only after you solved certain puzzles. This often results in general aimlessness. Though as stated above, there IS a hint system which you should not feel ashamed to use frequently. I'd say if you have any love for Graphic Adventures (and if you're old enough to still use that term) then give A Tale of Caos a shot.. Super chill game by people who obviously love the genre, and strikes a great balance between holding your hand and letting you figure it out (i.e. UHS style hints on demand, but you have to clickthrough). Mini games are simple enough and skippable. Items are reusable and modifiable in a way that feels fresh for point and click. Also hope the next ones are longer (with skippable dialogue) but the tone and interface, puzzles, it's all really accessible and logical.. boring, not funny, seems to be targeting younger audience. Also no ability to change resolution.. I really don't like the gameplay. The first screen shows perfectly what I don't like: there's a hammer, and you ask the protagonist to pick it up. She does nothing. But she actually IS trying to pick it up, without moving an inch, just doing "sounds" like "mmmph" to represent she's trying (mind you, in the same static pose, with a slightly looped animation). This carries on for the rest of scenarios. I'm already bored. Love the graphics, though. Will continue playing to see the outcome but so far, I have been very disappointed.. A particularly enjoyable way to spend time. I had a few problems with the game occasionally just stopping responding to the point I had to Alt-F4 out of it and try to play parts of it over because there is no autosave. But the story was quite enjoyable. The only other complaint I had was the multitool minigame - especially on a 4K monitor - you could click for it to unlock within the range and it might not accept it.. Meh. No voice acting, animation only while characters idling and it's simple looped. Characters not doing anything just standing while text explain that they actually do. Boring. Very boring. Plot isn't so bad and text wrote well, but without voices it's too boring to read. Graphic drawn well and its remind old games like King Quest or Space Quest. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea, or maybe I played not too many point-and-click quests to judge well. I think if you liked this graphic. yeah why not, it's cheap. But it's only one thing that game can actually gave you.. Really nice game, a little short maybe. I follow the devs since they released a Matter of Caos on the internet. I was really looking forward to this game. I just finished it and after a few adventures I ended up joining a personal hygiene related cult, I party pooped children and got friend with a black-skinned and fire-bearded blacksmith giant.. A particularly enjoyable way to spend time.
